Artist Statement

My work sits somewhere between "art" and "craft" and I think that's a good reflection of my own relationship to creativity. Clay is a great medium for me because you have to work with it – it contributes a lot to the final state of a piece and often you can't be sure what you're going to get on the other side of a glaze fire. This alleviates some of the pressure to have a perfectly crafted vision going into the process – and I like the surprise element. Sometimes you have to appreciate your work with fresh eyes, because it's not at all what you anticipated – and because my pieces are grounded in a sort of anthropomorphism, it's like meeting a new character every time.
