Artist Statement
I came to art after searching for purpose my whole life. I’ve tried the sciences, tech, finance and much more—but for no explainable reason, when I began painting, I knew that this was the purpose for my existence, and that I will never stop. My work challenges traditional ideas of what a painting should be. I work exclusively with canvas, wood, and paint, but within that constraint I like to break things: curving stretcher bars, layering surfaces, and double-sided or sculptural forms that challenge the traditional concepts of the artform. Some of my works shift over time—not just conceptually, but literally – as the sun’s light changes throughout the day, shifting shadows that are part of the works’ composition. They are paintings that breathe. Starting in June 2023, I have also been creating a series of murals in the Greenpoint Avenue Subway Station. These murals are created on the black, blank advertisement poster wall spaces. The name of the series, Lotus, is a reference to the lotus flower, known to blossom beautifully, though stemming from muddy and grotesque environments. These murals are made without permission, without announcement, and without any guarantee they’ll last. One has remained now for over two years. My goals as an artist are simple: 1. To dedicate my life to the craft 2. To become ever greater and 3. To create the best and most impactful works possible.
