Artist Statement

Yuze Zhang is a self-taught Chinese American painter whose evolving practice reexamines the core materials of painting—wood, acrylic, and canvas—through sculptural, often architectural interventions. By stretching canvases into curved or double-layered forms and orchestrating rhythmic cut-outs in his recent Square series, Zhang transforms painting into an active, reactive object. His large-scale works shift with light, space, and context, resisting fixed interpretation. Whether leaning or freestanding, they assert presence and invite viewers to engage on their own terms—forming a mutual, spatial relationship shaped by proximity, movement, and attention.
