Artist Statement

My background is in sculpture and my process begins in the physical world, building the supports with wood. I am interested in blurring the distinction between background and foreground and explore this in two ways- in a structural way, by adding a layer of wood that disrupts the flat surface; and in a painterly way, by accentuating or masking the areas where the surface shifts. I aim to treat each aspect of the work as a tool in order to achieve a desired effect- acknowledging the whole object, including the edges and shadows.
