Artist Statement
I’ve long been fascinated by individual states of being and the interactions people have with each other and the world around them. I enjoy the way a look, a pose, or simple expression can shed light on an individual’s inner thoughts, and in turn, allow me to reflect on my own. In many of my compositions, I strive to capture a depth of human experience in a seemingly single experience, the many moments that live within a moment. Influenced by the compositions of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints and the figurative expressions and brushstrokes of realist and impressionist artists, I attempt to create a narrative of people within the worlds they occupy. It is in this relationship of the figure connecting with the setting, that there is an entry point for understanding the complexity of the human experience. As the figure reconciles their place in the world, I invite the viewer, grounded in their own worldview and experiences, to create a corollary narrative through empathetic connection.
