Artist Statement
I re-frame the beautiful, weird, and disquieting images humanity has captured and left behind. I am interested in unpacking the stories hidden within photographs, and in the inherent tension between what an image claims to document and what it conceals. I act as a detective, an archaeologist, and a magpie, collecting paper evidence to form connections and to try to understand human history and life on this planet. My source materials are the images from books, magazines, and printed ephemera that I find while moving through my life. I remove these images from their original context and collage them together in flat work, or re-plot them onto glyph-like hand built sculptural forms. To make my large scale cutouts I use a jigsaw to draw shapes informed by textile diagrams and ancient symbols. These shapes originate from a place of communicating how something should be done or what something means. Once I build them into substrates, they become the container capable of exploring the concepts and ideas I discover in my found images. In a process that is akin to painting and film/TV editing, I collage the surface of these shapes, allowing them to act like a Rorschach test, and for the interplay between form and overall image relationships to coalesce. Each piece I make is a chance to explore a new narrative, a chance to unfold who we are as people, and an opportunity to try to understand what motivates us to do what we do.
