Artist Statement

Marysia Gacek draws from a wide range of sources including art history, film, 17th-century sculpture, Slavic rituals, and the topography of southern Poland, specifically the moorlands at the base of the Tatra Mountains. These panoramic scenes are composed of a mixture of lived and imagined events, and explore themes of femininity, fantasy, and memory. Gacek holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from the Glasgow School of Art. Gacek's work has been exhibited at GSS (Glasgow, Scotland), Neoterismoi Toumazou (Nicosia, Cyprus), Unosolo Project Room (Milan, Italy), 77 Mulberry (New York), ZK/U, the Center for Art and Urbanistics (Berlin), International Print Center New York, Unosunove (Rome, Italy), Govanhill Baths (Glasgow), NURTUREArt (Brooklyn), PS122 Gallery (New York), Hesse Flatow (Amagansett, NY), National Museum in Krakow (Poland), and Akureyri Art Museum (Iceland).
