Artist Statement

Marcelo Mayen is a photographer and filmmaker based in Greenpoint, where they own DREAMS ON COMMAND—an immersive storefront studio located at 42 West Street. Specializing in portraiture, Marcelo's work explores the spaces where reality begins to slip, and the line between what is and what could be starts to dissolve. For Marcelo, the camera is a dual-purpose tool: it reveals the truth and persuades us to believe in the impossible. Inside the studio, Marcelo transforms everyday moments into cinematic experiences using high-end projector technology and medium format Hasselblad cameras. These tools allow Marcelo to create portraits that feel both surreal and intimate—rendering each subject in a heightened, almost cinematic reality. Their work invites viewers to suspend disbelief and see people not just as they are, but as they might exist in a more playful, dreamlike dimension. A touch of humor often slips in, as seen in the attached portraits "Horsegirl" and "The Caped Lounger." Greenpoint has provided a space to grow and create with confidence. It’s here that Marcelo has learned to trust their instincts, embrace the strange, and bring people’s inner worlds to life—frame by frame.
