Artist Statement

I am an artist currently working out of my studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Figurative art has been a part of my life since I was a child, when my dad used to bring me to life drawing classes. The discipline and commitment to clarity of thought required for art reminds me of meditation. My artistic practice allows me to be present in the world, in order to calm my mind and deal with grief, stress, excitement and the whole spectrum of human emotion. I place my figures in liminal spaces in order to create a sense of universality. My subjects are myself or those close to me, and they may be waiting at a bus stop or squinting up at the sky, taking a still moment to sit in the quietness of the world. Like in meditation, my subjects are taking stock of the world. We are all part of the same air, sharing an experience of the world together. I hope to evoke that sense of community in my work. Many of my subjects may seem anonymous, because that is how I feel when I make my works. My subjects are quietly observing me observing them. I like my subjects and my viewers to sit in the uncertainty of human relationships, rather than as fully rendered and complete entities which exist independently. I often leave parts of my paintings underdeveloped, as a reminder of the physical act of creation and a window into the process of creating.
