Artist Statement

EXHIBITION OPENING May 31, 12-6pm LIZ ALDERMAN “MUCKLINGS” Liz Alderman creates bas-relief portraits of imaginary birds that are beautiful but grotesque. The protuberant surfaces of her colorful and extremely high-impasto pieces reveal her interest in what festers within or lurks beneath any given surface, be it decay, memory or trauma. Embedded in her thick layers of paint are repellent elements like dog hair, lint and scouring pads alongside other rubble from her daily life like thumbtacks, pill casings and rubber bands. In the finished work, one can’t quite tell if these elements have been purposefully buried in the paint or freshly excavated from it. The gallery at 1 Bell Slip is part of ARTS BROOKFIELD, a cultural initiative by Brookfield Properties that supports innovation in music, dance, theatre, film, and visual art through free art exhibitions and cultural experiences across their properties.
