Artist Statement
Kristen Schiele’s work depicts conspiring groups of female figures in a range of architectural theatrical backdrops. Working in painting and installation, Schiele renders figures from live drawing sessions or European porcelain poses with graphic inked lines. The figures are layered with landscape and architecture, or isolated in wood cut out portraits. Masked faces give the figures identities and attributes of Sci-Fi avatars, Japanese animation, Norwegian death metal and ceremonial masks or patterns. The bodies become pack animals, viewing the viewer, redefining behavior expectations and entangling themselves in their own narratives.
