Artist Statement
Kate McQuilen’s abstractions are completely flat, matte surfaces, with imagery embedded into the material. Through intersecting gradients, she creates ranging fields of color that impart a deep sense of space. The flatness of the surface allows the colors to shift, depending upon the angle at which the work is viewed. Screenprinting mistakes (moiré patterns and “kiss” marks) are used intentionally throughout the works to create layers without texture.
