Artist Statement

Karen “Karne” Vera's brightly colored, mixed-media works explore the realms of political and personal identity. In addition to traditional canvas, she uses corn husks and banana leaves as surfaces for mark-making. An important aspect of her process involves appropriating textile patterns from Central America, some of which are from ancestral cities or towns. These designs are reclaimed and integrated into the paintings with the stories inspired by Latin American history, familial word of mouth and the surviving codices from Guatemala and Mexico. Her visual narratives  are an interweaving of these elements and provide a generative way to approach the elusive and fragmented aspects of her identity.
