Artist Statement
S M A L L H O M E maker, mender // brooklyn, ny From the upper west side of Manhattan, Julia Small lives in Greenpoint with her son, husband and retired Broadway performer father. Since 2009 her brand smallhome with its signature items have been found all over the world. In the summer of 2021, the 7 year run of Small’s brick and mortar came to an end with flooding by tropical storms Elsa and Henri and moving what was left of the shop and studio into the vacant apartment above theirs. Since the pandemic her practice has been the softening of the city through tufting, embroidering and sewing mediums. Growing up in NYC, Small learned the value of making use of street finds, available space, and the importance of good lighting. Hand wired lamps with their shades of painted silk, tufted fabric, paint and embroidery showcase city facades illuminated within. Paintings of the cities she visits communicate the depth and joy she finds in their streets. Her sculptural self portraits are as whimsical as they are serious, depicting heavy topics such as health, injury and motherhood with recognizable found objects. The work welcomes you into her life, dont miss this chance to experience her iconic studio.
