Artist Statement

A 30-minute excerpt from a theatre piece; 'Blood in the Water' Blood in the Water is a theatre piece originally performed in Melbourne / Naarm, Australia at La Mama Theatre Company. It follows the mother of a young perpetrator, Ruth, who tried to keep her life and family together after her only son is convicted of a violent sexual assault. It explores the perspectives of Ruth, her sister Sally, daughter, Jen, and husband, and stepfather to her children, Ruben, as they navigate the aftermath of the horrific crime. A hard-hitting political and personal piece, this story explores the consequences for the family of a perpetrator. How do we move forward? How do we and should we forgive? Is it even possible to make sure it never happens again? Shortlisted for best new play at the Australian Theatre Festival in NYC, playwright Jorja Bentley's debut was a critical and commercial success, cementing her as an exciting emerging voice to watch.
