Artist Statement
My work explores intuitive creation through layering: building up lines, forms, and colors, then scraping them away to reveal what lies beneath. This process recalls earlier states of the painting, making visible its physical duration and the accumulation of decisions over time. The resulting image holds more than a single moment; it carries traces of what has been buried, altered, and reconsidered. While painting, I become acutely aware of shifting internal states as doubt, frustration, defeat, and hope surface through the act of making. I’m interested in how these sensations reveal themselves visually, allowing paintings to speak in ways that resist rational language. I’m also fascinated by how perception evolves—how a work can feel foreign in one moment and unexpectedly alive in another, despite remaining unchanged. Painting, for me, extends beyond ideas of beauty; it is a deeply personal and sometimes jarring encounter, a process that unsettles and recalibrates the nervous system without guaranteeing an outcome. This unpredictability keeps me engaged, with each finished piece unfolding into a curiosity about the next. Often, I am simply searching for confirmation that a fleeting or difficult-to-articulate feeling is real. Rooted in a “just paint” ethos, my practice thrives on immersion and persistence, whether in a notebook, on wood, or across a shaped canvas, embracing the tension of not knowing while working through each decision as it unfolds.
