Artist Statement
I am inspired by the ancient and the sacred across cultures, and the materials and techniques that different peoples have used to interact with or mimic the world around them and the world beyond. Different climates shape how we learn to connect with them, from agricultural techniques, to religious ideologies, and visual languages. I grew up in eastern Long Island, where pitch pines and white oaks met manicured gardens filled with daffodils and day lilies, where waves crashed on white sand beaches, and where farms sprawled out for miles on either side of Sunrise Highway. My visual language–how I connect with and pay homage to this world and the world beyond–is most often spoken through trees, flowers, edible plants and water.
