Artist Statement
Statement: Christopher’s art incorporates materials such as found objects/images, printed images, raw canvas, ephemera, and studio debris/detritus. Bruneaux is interested in and embraces juxtaposed images, meaning, and peculiar combinations of objects and images. His practice focuses on latent meaning, layers of material, the inundation of information in the late stage capitalism experience. As a self-taught artist, play and the constant urge to begin again at zero is critical to Christopher’s art-making. Christopher enjoys the blending of intention, improvisation, pleasure, restriction, escape, and freedom in his process. Bruneaux’s practice recalls elements of abstract expressionism, outsider art, art brut, contemporary abstraction, and anti-aesthetic. References to pop and internet culture can often be found in the works. In the blending of these approaches Bruneaux hopes to challenge and invite the viewer to the value we ascribe to images and material.
