Artist Statement

Amber Gatlin is a painter and performing artist who recently opened up her own business, Amber Gatlin Art LLC. GOS was her very first art market last year, and after making several new friends, she's hoping to continue to get to know the neighborhood and build her community of fellow art lovers. The worlds of visual and performing arts have never been completely separate. In her Youtube Channel, Gatlin talks openly about her journey as a painter and an actor to break down the idea that limiting oneself to a single medium is necessary for mastery and success. She gravitates towards gothic surrealism and often finds inspiration in fantasy animated films from the 1980s. Exploring historically feared omens like witches, ravens and snakes is her way of calling cultural ideals of “virtue” into question. Some of her greatest inspirations are painters Remedios Varo, Frida Kahlo, Amber Sky Alcock, and Michaela Eleanor Packstein.
