Artist Statement

Alyssa S Herrera (ASH) finds beauty in process – she works with materials that are based in traditional craft, from fiber arts to ceramic, these techniques have a long and inspiring history. ASH communicates themes of connection and disconnection and beauty in the overlooked through these mediums. The textures and colors in her work are found through observed details of natural environments – from moss and lichen growing on a branch, to a decomposing tree or animal being brought back into the earth – the outdoors is her sanctuary and her work is an ode to the earth. ASH has developed an element of trust and partnership with each material, allowing the raw qualities of that material to dictate the final details in her work.
