Artist Statement

“LAST LOOKS", a solo exhibition by Jake Scharbach closing on June 1st from 12 – 6pm. The show features an installation compiled of 32 resin coated charcoal and oil paintings, displayed together as a grid or filmstrip. An accumulative experience, a mantra repeated through the nostalgic fonts of a Hollywood fever dream, each panel contains a symbolic interpretation of what an ending might look like, social, political or personal. By collecting the cultural debris of America’s cinematic obsession and rendering it in paint and charcoal Scharbach repurposes it, creating a numbness through repetition until the hollow sounds coalesce into a new understanding of the moment: tombstones marking the social norms of a not so distant past, our anxieties about the future, or the hopes of a romantic ever after. The images are embedded in a crystal clear epoxy resin and become a mirror to reflect us in THE END. At the conclusion of the show on June 1st, LAST LOOKS will meet its own “end” as the individual panels are dispersed among collectors.
