Artist Statement
I am a time-based artist and educator with more than a decade of experience working in visual effects; an industry that, as the name indicates, prizes results over process. My relationship to image production has drastically shifted since I began living with an undiagnosed, invisible illness seven years ago. My work grapples with the contingencies of representing and thereby affecting lived conditions. Recent projects, whether in the form of 3D-printed candies that track the contours of my illness over the course of a year or a short film masquerading as a YouTube software tutorial purporting to heal “sick” images, allow me to engage with the complicated ways that contemporary visual culture has impacted my illness narrative while subverting categorical understandings of health and happiness with the help of nascent AI technologies.
