Artist Statement
I make paintings and drawings set in an imaginary underworld with a recurring cast of ghosts that are bound to a specific locale—an abandoned hotel in upstate New York. In essence, I create haunted psychic landscapes. The ghosts that live there are of varied social and economic classes, usually engaged in some form of courtship, contemplative self-reflection, or a more subtle type of cerebral alchemy. These characters reveal of range of emotions— from malice to pathos to unrequited love—all legible on the surface or just beneath. I am influenced by Southern Gothic literature and various streams of world history in regards to archetypes and mythological themes, although I try to use them in a subtle way. I aim for ambiguity, in order to leave some mysteries for the viewer to resolve for themselves.
