Artist Statement
Neighbor meets neighbor, sculpture meets craft at the intersection of an amplified socially based practice of creation. We all have a story and want to be heard and seen – this process is fluid, site-specific and ever changing. Works are created from site-specific donated fabrics, assembled and sewn together by the community for the greater goal to unite a feeling of shared ownership. The “owner” is not one person, but rather a network of participants and spectators. Process, participation and vulnerability become the non-visible successes that are amplified in the scale and color. The woven beauty of the community is physical, conversational and multi-faceted, represented through hashtags, scrap-books, histories and friendships, all made during the time-line of the project. Each person’s personal experience becomes part of the contemporary art narrative, making an everlasting connection between art, self, others and reframes an understanding of community.
