Artist Statement

Marcus Pierce’s art questions what makes art distinctly human, distinctly conscious in an age of AI-generated creations. He creates ever-evolving paintings that exaggerate the human process: take action, reflect, revise. His recursive and self-referencing style is inspired by cognitive science and models of consciousness. Because consciousness is experiential, he paints in public to allow the art to evolve in an ecosystem—a physical space, a specific time, with social interactions. Passersby are invited to approach and have conversations with him about the artwork as it unfolds, fluctuating in and out of form moving from abstracts to figurative works. A cross-pollination of ideas occurs that later may be echoed in the art. As a result, the work becomes a culmination of shared human experiences—something AI cannot create.
