Artist Statement

Natsumi Goldfish is a contemporary Japanese artist based in New York City. She creates paintings looking into man-made spaces that are personal, such as windows, fish tanks, and bathtubs that are depicted as realistic and dreamy or imaginary at the same time. Her creation is based on her interest in conscious and unconscious human behaviors and actions seen in history as well as in her life. "My art is based on my interest in human behavior: gestures, actions, and habits that derive from conscious and unconscious states of mind. By observing society and depicting human nature at a distance, my goal is to deliver perspectives on things that are relatively unknown, unrealized, hidden, unspoken, prohibited, or forgotten, but are nevertheless present within everyday life – if love is the essence of life, life is the essence of my art."-Natsumi Goldfish
