Artist Statement

“Interwoven” is a large-scale outdoor temporal and site- specific participatory weaving that invites participants to contribute a single T-shirt or item of clothing to a shared, evolving textile. Additional materials will be provided. Each garment is transformed into strips and incorporated into a growing communal structure—forming a collective material expression of memory, belonging, and connection. Clothing is a carrier of lived experience. What we wear, inherit, and discard is shaped by personal history, relationships, culture, and place. Through processes of cutting and weaving, individual pieces are transformed into threads of a shared field—where individual narratives remain present yet are continuously reconfigured through relation to others. Weaving functions as both method and metaphor. The differences from each contribution remain visible, but are held in connection rather than separation. The collective is not predetermined but emerges through accumulation, care, and participation over time. As a durational installation, “Interwoven” evolves spatially and temporally. Over time, it records the participants’ presence as layers—each contribution marking a moment of encounter. Across space, the structure expands and shifts, forming new densities, gaps, and overlaps. The work remains open and responsive to ongoing participation, touch, and change. The installation becomes a living archive of interdependence—an unfolding textile shaped by many hands. It questions how identity is formed not in isolation—but through continuous processes of connection. In this way, “Interwoven” proposes belonging as something that can be formed, transformed and shared through collective making and sustained presence.
