Sophia’s photographs present the artist at work in a fantastical, abstracted version of reality. A costumed figure poses for the camera, mimicking the postures and tropes of classical figure painting and photographic portraiture. She combines sculpture, painting and photography, practices developed independently and in concert, in alternatively symbiotic and cannibalistic ways. Her work examines traditional conceptions of beauty and upends romantic stereotypes about creative production.
